Whitby Beach is the long run of sand under West Cliff, north-west of the harbour, with the beach huts, the Spa above it and the piers closing the view east. It rates 4.7 from 7,093 Google reviews and earns that on a dry day — but it is a tidal North Sea beach reached by steep ramps, and both of those catch people out.
Whitby’s beaches run as a chain along this coast, and the stretch signed as Whitby Beach is the town’s own: below West Cliff, reached from town, down the long ramps from the West Cliff car parks, or by the cliff lift when it is running. The local beach guide …and donkey rides — and says swimming here is “relatively safe”, in contrast to the Sandsend end of the same sands.
Walk north-west and the sand continues at low water through Upgang Beach to the Newholm/Dunsley beck outflow and on towards Sandsend, about 3.7 km up the coast in a straight line. That is where the warnings start: the guide flags a strong along-shore flow past the beck, a shore dump breaking at the water’s edge, and further out at Sandsend Ness a rip that the guide says washes people out to sea every year — its advice for that end is not to swim at all. Beyond the east pier, the East Cliff flats surface at low tide as a field of rock pools and fossils; the tide returns fast there, so stay near the pier access.
A wide beach of clean golden sand that opens out as the tide drops and fills with people in August. A reviewer in May 2026 mentions beach chairs for hire and beach mats sold in the shops nearby; another in May 2024 lists deckchairs and windbreaks for hire. North-west from the ramps you pass the pavilion, the lifeguard huts and the row of coloured beach huts; one visitor in June 2025 noted a large blue building beyond them with public toilets and a café. Two things the photographs do not show. The descent is a real slope: three of the 40 reviews call the path or ramp steep, and one visitor in August 2023 gave three stars and wrote that the beach was “hard to access without walking further along due to a steep path”, adding they may not return because of the access. And one visitor in June 2025 reported no mobile phone signal in the shadow of the cliffs — worth knowing if you are walking towards Sandsend on a falling tide. Check Whitby’s high-water time before you set off and turn back with margin.
Dogs are restricted in summer. Reviewers describe a ban across the main beach for the season with only a small permitted section left: one in April 2023 gave the dates as 1 May to the end of September and mentioned a £1,000 fine; another in June 2025 found that section so small he walked about 1.5 km along the promenade towards Sandsend before reaching usable sand. Two other reviewers, in November and December 2025, say the summer restriction is their only complaint and walk dogs here the rest of the year. Parking is the recurring gripe. One visitor in June 2026 wrote: “Parking is nightmare specifically in mornings. Most of the Parking machines are out of order.” Two others, in February 2026 and June 2023, said the same in milder terms.
Not on the main stretch in summer. One visitor in April 2023 put the ban at 1 May to the end of September; another in June 2025 found the remaining permitted section tiny. The local guide rates this stretch relatively safe with a lifeguard on duty in summer, unlike the Sandsend end, where it advises against swimming at all because of the rip along the ness. Reviewers in June 2026 and August 2025 both mention how cold the water stays.
It can be. The way down from the West Cliff car parks is a set of long ramps, and three of the 40 reviews single out the slope, though one visitor in November 2025 called the access easy. There is a cliff lift, but the local guide qualifies it with “if it’s running” — check the official site before planning around it.
