Hull to Whitby by Train

By Whitby Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

From Hull, go via Scarborough. Northern runs from Hull Paragon to Scarborough in about 80 minutes with nine stops, and Arriva’s X93 or X94 bus takes about an hour from there to Whitby bus station. The whole trip came to about 2h 35m on a weekday. Hull Paragon to Scarborough is a single train, so the only change on this route is onto the bus. Trains left Hull Paragon about hourly from 05:30 to 19:21, most of them at 21 minutes past the hour.

The all-rail route

Staying on trains the whole way is possible, but slow. It takes TransPennine Express from Hull Paragon to Leeds (55 minutes), another TransPennine train from Leeds to Middlesbrough (83 minutes) and Northern from Middlesbrough to Whitby (93 minutes). With two changes and close to an hour of waiting between them, the journey took about 4h 49m, more than two hours longer than going via Scarborough.

It also ran only five times on a weekday, at 06:00, 11:03, 15:03, 16:03 and 17:03. The one thing it offers is a finish by train into Whitby station, rather than an hour and 48 stops on the bus from Scarborough.

The change at Scarborough

The connection at Scarborough between the Northern train from Hull and the bus to Whitby took about 9 to 15 minutes on the weekday timetable. That keeps the trip moving, but it also means a late-running train out of Hull Paragon could leave you watching the bus go.

Arriving

Whitby bus station is 406 metres from the swing bridge, about six minutes on foot. If you take the all-rail route via Leeds instead, Whitby station is a seven-minute, 525-metre walk.

Driving the 64 miles via the A171 takes about 1h 53m, some 40 minutes quicker than the Scarborough route and far quicker than the all-rail one.
