Sheffield to Whitby by Train

By Whitby Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

The quicker of the two main ways from Sheffield uses two trains and a bus. CrossCountry and Northern both run from Sheffield to York, about an hour with two stops, then TransPennine Express takes you on to Scarborough in 49 minutes, where Arriva’s X93 or X94 bus covers the last hour to Whitby bus station. A typical weekday run took about 3h 43m, and the fastest about 3h 33m.

Same changes, more time

The all-rail route has the same number of changes but takes about 50 minutes longer. CrossCountry or Northern takes you from Sheffield to Leeds in about 41 minutes with two stops, TransPennine Express runs from Leeds to Middlesbrough in about 83, and Northern’s train covers the last 93 minutes to Whitby. The total came to about 4h 31m, and six departures connected, at 06:47, 07:22, 11:22, 15:22, 16:52 and 17:22.

Each route spends just under an hour on its connections: at York and Scarborough on the bus route, at Leeds and Middlesbrough on the all-rail one.

Choosing by the clock

The Scarborough route via York left Sheffield at 08:22, 09:32, 11:42, 12:32, 13:32 and 15:32, the 15:32 being the latest found. That is where the all-rail route earns its place: the 06:47 and 07:22 via Leeds leave before the 08:22, and the 16:52 and 17:22 after the 15:32.

Other Scarborough connections also appear on the weekday timetable, leaving Sheffield at 11 minutes past most hours from 08:11 to 20:11 and taking about 3h 10m, along with routings via York or Darlington to Middlesbrough at around four hours.

The 126-mile drive via the M1 takes about 2h 22m, quicker than either way by rail from Sheffield.
