Newcastle to Whitby by Train

By Whitby Guide editors · Updated 22 October 2026

Rail from Newcastle to Whitby takes just under three hours, and on the weekday timetable we checked four departures turned up. One is Northern’s through train at 16:40, which takes about 2h 54m and calls at 27 stations with no change. The other three change at Middlesbrough and left Newcastle at 09:05, 12:39 and 19:05. On a typical run only the 09:05 reaches Whitby by rail before midday, and the 19:05 was the latest rail departure found.

Changing at Middlesbrough

The journeys with a change are, if anything, slightly quicker than the through train, at about 2h 49m. Northern runs both legs: Newcastle to Middlesbrough in about 69 minutes with five stops, then the Whitby train, about 93 minutes with 17. That can leave as little as five to seven minutes to change at Middlesbrough, which is tight.

A missed connection there hurts, because the Whitby trains out of Middlesbrough are hours apart: on a weekday they left at 05:53, 06:46, 10:21, 14:05, 18:02 and 20:19. The through train avoids that risk altogether, which is the main argument for the 16:40 from Newcastle.

Other options

A train from Newcastle to Saltburn with a bus on from there also appears on the weekday timetable, at times including 06:40, 10:39 and 13:40, and takes about the same time as the rail routes. Journeys via Darlington or via Scarborough take longer, from just over three hours.

Driving is much quicker on this route: the 73 miles via the A19 and A171 take about 1h 36m, over an hour less than any of the trains.

Arriving

Every rail option from Newcastle ends at Whitby station, a seven-minute walk of 525 metres from the swing bridge.
