Middlesbrough to Whitby by Train

Two direct services run from Middlesbrough to Whitby, and neither is frequent. Northern’s train takes about 92 minutes on a typical run. Arriva’s X93 bus is quicker, at about 69 minutes with 23 stops. On a weekday the train left Middlesbrough at 05:53, 06:46, 10:21, 14:05, 18:02 and 20:19, and the bus at 11:20, 12:20, 14:20, 15:20, 18:30 and 20:30.

Train or bus

If one of the X93 times suits you, the bus is the faster choice by over 20 minutes. The train has the early part of the day to itself: the 05:53 and 06:46 are the direct ways to reach Whitby first thing, and the 10:21 leaves an hour before the earliest X93 found, at 11:20. Later in the day the two leave close together, at 14:05 and 14:20, 18:02 and 18:30, and 20:19 and 20:30, so it comes down to which departure fits your plans.

Even so, the direct departures found in the morning jump from the 06:46 train to the 10:21, three and a half hours later.

Earlier connections by bus

For a morning start without the train, the weekday timetable also had buses with a change at Guisborough Market Place, leaving Middlesbrough at 07:31, 07:45 and 08:45 and taking roughly 1h 15m to 1h 30m. Journeys by train to Saltburn or Marske with a bus from there also appear, but they are slower than either direct service.

By car, the 31 miles via the A171 take about 50 minutes, some 20 minutes less than the X93.

Arriving

The train finishes at Whitby station, 525 metres and about seven minutes on foot from the swing bridge. The X93 stops at Whitby bus station instead, a slightly shorter walk of 406 metres, about six minutes, to the same point.
